Prison Island & Spices Farm

Meet the Giant Ancient Turtles

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

About Prison Island & Spices farm

Changuu Island is a small island about 5.6 km from Stone Town which is known with at least 2 more names: Prison Island (1860s) and Quarantine Island because of Yellow fever (1920s)

You can find here the oldest turtles in the world: these Aldabra giant tortoises were originally a gift…thank you Seychelles!

Nutmeg, used in cake and coffee and also locally in nutmeg porridge, is an alleged aphrodisiac. Remember to buy a lot of bags!

GOOD TO KNOW

Tips for you

Book a private boat to Prison Island so you will have the chance to leave at the time you prefer (lunch time is the best for exploring on your own)

Bring snorkelling equipment: the reef is amazing!

If you have the full day ahead combine Prison Island with Nakupenda beach tour. This beach is also known as the “Sand bank” or “Hidden Beach” because it appears and disappears with the tide.

THE SPICES ISLAND

A taste of colours

The Island got its nickname as a result of being one of the world’s leading producers of spices such as clove, nutmeg and cinnamon in the 19th century.

A walk through the farm gives you an intense, detailed introduction to the region’s rich botanical and cultural heritage.

MEET JACK!

Looks similar to Durian but…

Jackfruit resembles Durian in appearance, but they are not related. The flavour of Jackfruit is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango, and banana. And it smells good!
